If your cat or dog has eaten a plant and you are worried, call a veterinarian now. In the United States you can also reach the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center on (888) 426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline on (855) 764-7661; both answer at any hour and both charge a consultation fee. Take the plant, or a piece of it, with you if you can, because naming it is the first thing you will be asked. A list on a website is not a substitute for that call. It cannot see your animal, it does not know how much was eaten or when, and nothing on this site tells you what to do about a poisoning at home. This section is for the decision that comes before all of that: which plant to buy, and where in the house to put it.

What's here

The hubs below are of two kinds. A toxic list names plants that a source records as poisonous to cats or to dogs, with that source and the date it was read next to each entry. A safe list names plants that at least two independent sources record as non-toxic to both animals. One source on its own is never enough for a reassuring answer, which is why the safe lists are shorter than the toxic ones. Both kinds cover cats and dogs only, because those are the animals our sources classify consistently. Where sources disagree about a plant, the page shows the cautious answer, says plainly that they differ, and names both. A plant that appears on no list here simply has no sourced record on this site. That is not the same as being safe, and it should not be read that way. The same statement appears on each plant's own page, next to its source and, where the source names them, the parts of the plant involved. Read these lists as a way of choosing what to bring home, and of deciding which shelf a plant goes on. They are not a way of working out whether an animal that has already eaten something needs help: that judgement belongs to a veterinarian who can examine the animal.
